EXPLORE THE FULL POTENTIAL OF HFC NETWORK

Background
The cable television business in the Philippines started late, so coaxial network is not widely deployed, and the quality of coaxial cable facilities are still unsatisfactory. However, according to an article published by the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) of the Philippines, the Philippines has the fastest growing rate in internet business in the world. Thus, there is a huge potential to develop local internet service over cable in the Philippines. It should be noticed that most of the operators in the Philippines are private, hence cost-effectiveness is of great importance for those operators when building their internet business.

Converge is the largest limited TV operator in the Philippines, which is headquartered in Manila, the capital city of the Philippines. Converge runs business in multiple cities across the Philippines. The company not only provides users with FTTH solutions, but also delivers internet service over HFC network where the original coaxial is laid.

Dilemma
Over the past few years, Converge planned to expand their business to new users in some cities. Given that the users’ dwellings are scattered and the head-end is far from the fiber node, a good choice is to use the Remote MACPHY devices (RMD) for internet service over HFC network. Traditionally, these devices are deployed in headend and cannot be used as TV signal modulator, which means operators need extra investment in optical transmitter and receiver if they want to deliver TV and internet services simultaneously. Converge wants to limit their investment in headend and therefore they want to find a solution that can put all the modulation and DOCSIS function down to fiber node.

Solution
Converge chose our outdoor RMD devices to help them realize the aforementioned requirements. Compared to centralized solutions, our distributed access architecture (DAA) moves the CMTS down to fiber nodes, which reduces the amount of end users per device and increases the average user bandwidth. Besides, using the BC channel of our RMD devices, Converge prevented a great amount of expenditure on optical transmitter and receiver, and easily delivered TV signal and broadband service through our devices over the existing HFC network.

All in all, our RMD solution with DAA has demonstrated to be cost-effective and promising for cable operators who want to save time and money in attracting new users by providing faster broadband and high-quality TV service in new areas.
